KOSTÜM POP UP: WHOLE ENERGY
During July we will be having two fantastic Pop Ups hosting local artists & entrepreneurs!
Saturday, July 8th and Sunday July 9th from 1-6pm each day we will have Patrice Johnson, creator & owner of Whole Energy, Popping Up with her organic self care body products! As always we will have free refreshments. Follow KOSTÜM on Instagram @kostumonpiedmont and on Facebook to find out more about this weekend of self care!
In order to get to know Patrice and Whole Energy a bit better we asked her a few questions, and here’s what we learned:
- What do you do for work?
I am currently a fulltime entrepreneur!!! I created and run Whole Energy, a line of Natural and Organic Self Care body products.
- How did you get to that point in your career?
Up until September of last year, I worked for the City and County of San Francisco. I worked for 6 years as a transit operator and for over 2 years as a senior clerk working operations providing administrative support to the temporary sign program. I’ve sustained neck and shoulder injuries that over time have required me to pay more and more attention to my self-care and my physical limitations. The medications I was talking eventually compromised the integrity of my stomach and I had to find alternative ways to manage my pain and wellbeing. It also began to become apparent after I changed jobs due to my limitations that “regular” work would not likely be my strongest option as the repetitive motions were causing me to be in constant pain. I finally went off work in June 2015 and that is when I began to make the deodorant. Because I was off from work I was able to spend time learning about natural medicine and remedies. My father also experienced a bad bout of bronchitis that sprung me into action working with herbs and essential oils. From there I made a pain salve for my own pain and continued to develop product around my self-care journey and those around me.
- What are you passionate about?
I am passionate about helping others. I always knew I wanted to help people but I wasn’t sure how. Waking up to lifestyle changes I truly needed to make in order to improve my quality of life showed me how important health and wellbeing truly are. Natural medicine showed me that I could truly and confidently take that care into my own hands and place it in the hands of others.
- What feeds you creatively? (If different than number 3)
I’m often inspired by things around me, I am a very visual person. I love color and texture. I’m a constant thinker, I watch people and their behaviors. Through observation I wonder about so much and I learn. I’m also inspired by community. I ask questions and I learn from others stories and pull inspiration from their experiences and mine together.
- What is one of your favorite aspects of Oakland (or area of the Bay in which you live)?
I’m from San Francisco, and have been living in Antioch since 2011. I’ve spent almost a year vending now, and that vending has been 95% in Oakland! There is such a rich culture of entrepreneurialism here and an abundance of resources unlike I’ve seen anywhere else in the Bay Area thus far. People seem to really care about community here! I’ve been taken in by so many people and organizations, and for that Oakland will always have a sweet spot with me.
- How do you feel most connected to Oakland (whether it’s the people, culture, environment, etc.)?
I’ve been lucky enough to gather an amazing sister circle of entrepreneurs, community organizations, and activists around me. The people are real and I love that. The culture is very much in line with the things that are important to me and really there are lots of different things happening here. From market places, restaurants, community events, networking, and building, the environment is very fertile right now!
- How is fashion a part of your daily life?
I just graduated with an associate in fashion merchandising so I’ve spent several years immersed in fashion. I’ve spent time learning what looks good on my body and experimenting with different styles. Presentation is everything. Being comfortable and feeling confident is key. Once you know how to dress your body and find your style, you collect your key pieces. I like structure and silhouette. I also like color and texture. I buy clothing and accessories that make me feel good so that no matter what I’m wearing I’m confident.
- What do you hope Kostümers walk away with after seeing or purchasing your products?
I hope that they walk away with the confidence and awareness that they’re taking home a product that is truly made for their personal necessity, and that it will contribute to their continued wellbeing and health.
